Transforming Tourism Education Through Zero-Waste Innovation: Inside the Tourism-Zero Project

Published At: 06 May 2026

Tourism-Zero is redefining the future of sustainable tourism through an international Erasmus+ collaboration that brings together universities, industry partners, and tourism stakeholders from Thailand, Laos, China, Greece, and Spain. The project focuses on developing innovative zero-waste tourism curricula, modernizing hospitality education, and equipping the next generation of tourism professionals with practical skills in sustainable waste management, environmental responsibility, and green hospitality operations. Through research-driven course development, academic staff training, and international knowledge exchange, Tourism-Zero is building a stronger foundation for environmentally responsible tourism across Asia and Europe.

Beyond the classroom, Tourism-Zero is actively transforming ideas into real-world impact. The project supports MOOC-based learning, student placements in tourism enterprises, and professional upskilling initiatives for the hospitality industry. More than 500 students, 60 tourism enterprises, and hundreds of tourism professionals are expected to participate throughout the project’s implementation. From international workshops and policy dialogues to sustainable tourism pilot activities, Tourism-Zero demonstrates how higher education can become a driving force for zero-waste innovation and sustainable destination development in the global tourism sector.
