On March 2-3, 2023, Asst. Prof. Dr. Orawit Thinnukool, head of the Embedded System and Computational Science Lab research group at the College of Arts, Media and Technology, brought the management team to meet and establish academic cooperation with Prof. Dr. Bannakij Lojanapiwat, M.D., along with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sirianong Namwongprom, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, to drive research collaboration with the MIT Jameel Clinic of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dean of the College of Arts, Media and Technology, Asst.Prof. Dr. Worawit Janchai, also participated in the meeting.
Joining the MIT Jameel Clinic was a significant achievement, and it wasn't easy for Chiang Mai University representatives to become part of this prestigious institution. However, with the support of the university, the research group has been continuously promoting its work with global networks, which allows them to bring relevant working groups together.
Breast cancer is a prevalent concern, and it has been found to have a high chance of occurrence in Thai women and women worldwide. The research group is dedicated to developing diagnostic tools that can detect breast cancer in its early stages to increase the chances of successful treatment. The collaboration with the MIT Jameel Clinic and the Health Innovation Center at the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, has enabled the research group to sign a cooperation network research agreement between institutions focusing on artificial intelligence for cancer diagnosis.
During their visit to the MIT Jameel Clinic, the team and executives met with Senior Director Ignacio Fuentes and Prof. Regina Barzilay, a leading professor who has developed an algorithm for cancer diagnosis based on artificial intelligence. They discussed and set guidelines for conducting joint research that focuses on quick results, including discussions on the use of joint data. The visit marked the signing of a memorandum of understanding on joint research for the first time between Chiang Mai University and MIT Jameel Clinic.
The team also visited the Media Lab, a well-known institute responsible for research and development of innovations that enter the technology market by using deep technology. They had the opportunity to see the application of artificial intelligence technology to develop innovations in various fields and presented relevant research by the Affective Computing research group. This visit reinforces the important policy of Chiang Mai University in conducting research that responds to the university's development strategy.
