1. Motivation for Joining the Programme

Participating in the Erasmus+ Programme – Learning Mobility for Higher Education Students and Staff (KA171) was a significant opportunity for personal and academic development. I believed that studying abroad would broaden my academic knowledge, improve my language skills, and enhance my international perspective. Living in a different country and cultural environment allowed me to gain new insights, experience diverse ways of life, and learn beyond the classroom.

I wanted to challenge myself by studying in an unfamiliar academic and social environment, expecting that such an experience would transform my way of thinking and expand my worldview. Personally, I have a strong interest in European history and mythology. Italy, with its long historical legacy and crucial role in the development of Western civilization, attracted me deeply. The opportunity to study and live in Italy, especially in Florence—a city of outstanding historical and cultural significance—motivated me to join the programme. This experience became a valuable life opportunity to explore knowledge and realities that I had previously only encountered through books and imagination.

2. Academic and Cultural Experiences Abroad

Participating in the exchange programme enabled me to experience an international educational system and learn about European teaching and learning approaches, which emphasize critical thinking, discussion, and knowledge exchange. This learning style was new and challenging for me, but it significantly enhanced my analytical skills and academic confidence.

Studying alongside students from diverse countries strengthened my English communication skills and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. Although I initially felt anxious about language barriers, I gradually realized that communication was more achievable than expected. This experience helped me develop confidence in using English in real-life situations.

Living in Italy also provided rich cultural experiences. I learned about Italian lifestyles, daily routines, food culture, and language use. Not everyone spoke English, which encouraged me to adapt and learn basic Italian expressions. I also had the opportunity to witness religious and cultural traditions, such as Easter celebrations and religious processions.

Florence offered remarkable exposure to history and art, including landmarks such as the Duomo di Firenze and masterpieces like David, The Birth of Venus, and Primavera. The city is also historically connected to Leonardo da Vinci. Furthermore, I traveled to other important Italian cities, such as Rome, Venice, Milan, and Vatican City. These experiences contributed significantly to my academic, personal, and cultural development and provided a strong foundation for future learning and professional growth.

3. Adaptation and Living Environment

Studying and living abroad required considerable adaptation to a new environment in terms of language, culture, academic systems, and daily life. Since this was my first time in Europe, the initial period was challenging. The cold weather, rain, and unfamiliar surroundings caused feelings of homesickness and emotional difficulty.

However, over time, I gradually adapted to the new environment. Differences in living costs were surprising, as some items that are inexpensive in Thailand were relatively expensive in Italy. To manage expenses, I learned to cook and purchase ingredients independently. Fortunately, the presence of a Chinatown in Florence made it easier to find Asian ingredients.

Transportation in Florence was convenient and punctual, with walking and buses being the primary modes of travel. I also learned practical lessons about daily life, such as the importance of validating bus tickets to avoid fines. Traveling by train to other cities was also convenient, although it required awareness of personal safety, such as guarding against pickpocketing.

Overall, adapting to a new environment strengthened my resilience, independence, and problem-solving skills. I also learned that exploring new places—even alone—can be highly rewarding and enriching.

4. Final Project Experience

Before participating in the exchange programme, I conducted a project on User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design for a Telemedicine system for small healthcare facilities, using Phanu Medical Clinic (psychiatric clinic) as a case study. I completed the proposal stage and prepared research instruments and data before traveling to Italy.

During my stay abroad, I focused on documentation and planning, and after returning to Thailand, I completed the project and successfully defended it. This experience taught me the importance of careful planning and time management, especially when balancing academic responsibilities with international mobility.

5. Recommendations for Future EU KA171 Participants

For students planning to participate in the EU KA171 programme, I recommend preparing both physically and mentally for new environments and challenges. English is the primary language of instruction, but learning basic local vocabulary can be very helpful, especially in situations where English is not widely used.

It is also important to plan academic schedules, course registration, and credit transfer in advance to avoid administrative difficulties. Being open-minded, adaptable, and willing to express opinions are essential for successful intercultural learning.

Financial preparation is equally important. Students should study the cost of living, transportation systems, and accommodation options and prepare emergency funds. Ultimately, embracing differences in culture and lifestyle will make the exchange experience meaningful and transformative.
